This book got me thinking about Julian's and Garak's relationship. Garak tries to get Julian to leave in order to protect him. Julian defends Garak.
I was surprised when I first read that a lot of people wanted Julian and Garak to end up together. People thought Garak was flirting with Julian. TPTB even instructed the actor who played Garak to tone it down.
This book didn't go that far, but it easy easy to see how it could be done. When the High Gul asked if there was anyone he shouldn't kill Garak could have asked for Julian to be spared.
