The Darling Dahlias
May. 8th, 2013 08:55 pmThe Darling Dahlias and the Cucumber Tree
The description on the CD case says in part: But when a treasure trove of sterling silver is found buried under the town's famous Cucumber Tree, two of the Dahlias claim ownership, which leads to some very unladylike behavior
The silver is found until the very end, and there is no unladylike behavior.
A better description is: The country may be struggling through the Great Depression, but the good ladies of Darling, Alabama, are determined to keep their chins up and their town beautiful. Their garden club, the Darling Dahlias, has just inherited a new clubhouse and garden, complete with two beautiful cucumber trees in full bloom. But life in Darling is not all garden parties and rosemary lemonade. When local blond bombshell Bunny Scott is found in a suspicious car wreck, the Dahlias decide to dig into the town's buried secrets, and club members Lizzy, Ophelia, and Verna soon find leads sprouting up faster than weeds. The town is all abuzz with news of an escaped convict from the prison farm, rumors of trouble at the bank, and tales of a ghost heard digging around the cucumber tree. If anyone can get to the root of these mysteries, it's the Darling Dahlias.
It is a good mystery. It does a good job of capturing the time. I liked all the characters. It was interesting to learn about Further Chronicles of Avonlea and the lawsuit. I hadn't know about that.
I like that one of the ladies decides to read Nancy Drew even though the librarian tries to dissuade her because it is a children's book

Saving the World
Jan. 25th, 2013 09:40 pmI had never heard of the Smallpox expedition to Spanish America. It was interesting to learn about. Francisco Balmis is portrayed as a brilliant yet flawed man. I had never thought about what they would have had to done to keep the smallpox vaccine viable. With no refrigeration it would have to be live carriers. I loved Isabella's struggle to maintain hope in the face of the obstacles that they faces.
A Place in the Country
Dec. 10th, 2012 01:12 amI enjoyed this book, but I got annoyed with the Narrator. She pronounced "Jesus" with J sound not the H sound. The character was from Mexico. Once the wife explains to an elder woman (who said it was too soon for Jesus to be calling her) that it is actually pronounced "Hesus". And Mark makes a point of saying he remembered to say "Hesus" not "Jesus". It annoyed me every time she said it wrong. Since it was pointed out twice what the right way was.
I enjoyed the story. I knew Izzie's trip to London wouldn't go well. Caroline asked no questions about the supervision. At least she realized that it was the wrong decision and she let Izzie talk her into it.

The River Wife
Oct. 24th, 2012 09:23 pmI enjoyed listening to this book on CD. It interwove multiple generations. However she has a one armed man holding a lantern and a woman's hand. He puts down the lantern then lets go of her hand. How does that work? Also Clement doesn't know what Heddie was talking about when she says they were looking for Jacques' treasure. However I thought I remembered them fantasizing what they would do with it when they found it earlier in the story.
The ending was melancholy, which fit well I thought.

It All Began in Monte Carlo
Aug. 30th, 2012 10:35 pmI did not like this book. Sunny was an idiot. I'm I suppose to feel sorry for her? I'd love to be able to just take off and go to France, fly first class and stay in a luxury hotel, with my little purse dog of course! Mac's postponing the wedding is bad. But it doesn't seem like Sunny was that invested in the wedding. She hadn't invited anyone-her best friend or her parents. She had a dress she didn't even like!
Sunny is beautiful, rich, has her own business and rich handsome men falling over her. Why is she being such an idiot? She is portrayed as this successful, independent, biker girl and she is feeling like she needs to prove her self. It makes no sense.
Kitty is such an obvious tramp. The offer from Maha has such obvious red flags only a fool would think it was a good idea.
I spent most of the book hoping something bad was going to happen to Sunny.
It would have made more sense to switch Pru with Sunny. Pru needing to prove her independence would have made sense. Also the comments on her being innocent applies better to Pru.
I guess the author thought it should be Sunny because she is a re-occurring character in the series. But I don't care about Sunny when she acts OOC & stupid.
Spoiler alert - Sunny & Mac end up back right where they started!

The Cottage Tales of Beatrix Potter
Apr. 28th, 2012 10:49 amThe Tale of Applebeck Orchard
I was surprised by how charming this book was. I love the narrator's English accent. At first I wasn't sure about the mixing of human viewpoints with talking animals, but it worked. Both storylines were interesing. The authors asides were charming and intersting. I would love to read more of teh series.

Pesonal Demon
Dec. 16th, 2011 10:54 pmPretty good. Did it make me want to go back and read the prior books in the series - not particularly. I was more interested in Lucas than Hope. I liked the male reader's voice better. I figured out what Karl's problem was faster than Hope did. I found my self thinking they couldn't kill Paige of so one of the late surprises didn't really surprise me.I didn't like Hope telling herself Karl's idea that the demon part isn't evil, its just not human.A demon by definition is evil
Say You're One of Them
Oct. 21st, 2011 10:10 pmAn Oprah Book Club book - so it is depressing. Oprah Book Club and depressing are synonymous.. Does she ever pick a happy book? I won't read a book because it is an Oprah Book Club, I might read it in despite of that.
The CD had 3 of the 5 stories from the book.
My Parents Bedroom is about the horrible fighting between the Hutus and the Tutsis. I hadn't heard of the Twa before this CD.
An Ex mas Feast Do they really say ex-mas? I was so annoyed at the boy throwing away his future because his sister left.
What Language is That a young christian Ethiopian girl doesn't understand why she can no longer be Best Friends with her Muslim neighbor.
